Store baby food: everything you should know

Practically every mother wonders whether it is a good idea to store baby food. Although baby food should preferably be fresh, there are several ways to store baby food that has already been cooked so that it does not lose its nutritional properties.

You can store baby food for up to three months and should always take the right precautions to ensure your baby’s health.

It is important to avoid the spread of bacteria in order to ensure the well-being of your children. Do not feed your baby directly from the container in which the food is stored. Bacteria in your child’s saliva will stay there and multiply easily.

If you store food in this way, you contribute to harmful bacteria at the next consumption.

Is it a good idea to keep baby food?

If you store baby food that has already been cooked, you will save time and money at the same time. There are several methods you can use to store your baby food.

Portion the baby food according to your baby’s needs

It is important to separate the portions your child will eat. Take with a spoon the portion needed for the moment and keep the rest in clean, well sealed containers.

With this precaution you avoid contamination of the food while making sure that the food is still good next time.

However, if you have fed your baby with a spoon from the container and you have leftovers, it is best to throw them away. In this way you will again avoid the spread of bacteria that can make children sick when you give them this food later.

A cool place is best to store unopened baby food

If the glass or bag has not been opened, you can store it in a cool place at room temperature. Storage sites with high temperatures can promote the growth of bacteria and spoil the food in this way.

If some of these containers have moisture, it is best to throw them away immediately as they can make the baby sick.

As you continue to buy new foods, we recommend that you put them in the back of the pantry. At the same time, put the older foods forward for earlier consumption so that they do not decay.

Keep baby food in the fridge: two or three days

If containers of puree, soup sum or other food have been opened, you can keep them in the fridge for two or three days. However, you should only do this if the lid is tightly closed and the food has not been contaminated.

For this reason, it is always recommended to place the portion that the baby is eating in a separate container and store the rest.

If you prepare porridge, soups or other baby food, leave the dishes at room temperature for no more than two hours. Because bacteria spread very quickly.

If you are preparing the food at home, you should thoroughly clean the storage containers with detergent and hot water. It is also important to leave the food to cool down before freezing.

Ice cube trays are ideal for portioning and freezing baby food: cover them with cling film to ensure the best possible protection. Store the individual ice cubes in larger containers after freezing to have portions for different days.

Keep baby food deep-frozen: no longer than three months

Frozen food should not be stored for more than three months. Therefore, label the glasses and containers. This will help you to remember the freezing date and the contents.

Recently crushed fruit should be frozen immediately. However, this does not apply to vegetables. Add a few drops of lemon juice to the fruit before freezing to preserve the vitamins and protect the fruit from turning brown. Crush vegetables when they are not frozen to maintain consistency.

How am I supposed to defrost the food?

To defrost the food, do not put it in the fridge for more than 48 hours to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Another option is to place the container in a little boiled water, e.g. a water bath.

If you use the microwave, stir the food well. Be careful as some parts can be very hot when heated in the microwave. This can cause burns to the baby’s mouth and tongue.

Do not freeze puree once it has been defrosted. Also keep the refrigerator clean for optimum protection and general hygiene.
