Yacon: How does it stimulate your metabolism and overall health

Yacon is very strange to most people. This kind of root food has the skin of sweet potato, but it has pear-like pulp, isn’t it strange?

It is worth noting that yacon is a healthy food. Next, learn about its health benefits.

Yacon: How does it stimulate your metabolism and overall health

The yacon plant from South American Peru forms tubers 20 centimeters long, which have already been revered by the Incas for their sweet taste and healing effect. The appearance obviously differs from the expected taste. Who associates the earthy tuber with the hearty taste of a potato is wrong. The yacon root has always been used as a sugar substitute and can be used much better as a sweetener due to its low glycaemic value.

Conventional sugar raises the blood sugar level, which in the long run can lead to diabetes or other diseases. The concentrate from the yacon root or the tasty syrup does not strain the body as much as sugar despite its sweet taste and can boost your metabolism.

An exceptional composition

The special composition of fructose in the yacon root is decisive for the high tolerance. About 50 percent of the glucose content consists of inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS).

The saccharides are so-called prebiotics, which feed the good bacteria in the intestine, thereby cleaning the large intestine and stimulating the immune system of the entire body.

In contrast to granulated sugar, they are low in calories and even stimulate the metabolism. Further ingredients of the yacon root ensure that they stimulate the metabolism.

This impressive effect was already proven in a study in 2009: 40 overweight women with cholesterol problems took food containing a lot of Yacon for four months. 15 women with the same problems received only placebo containing sugar.

At the end of the study, the women who took Yacon lost 15 kilos, while the rest gained 1.6 kilos. In addition, cholesterol levels dropped by an average of 29 percent. It concerns thus far more positive effects, than only the metabolism to stimulate to be able.

How to prepare Yacon

If you get to buy fresh Yacon root, you should not miss the raw taste of the root. In South America it is known as a ground apple. This has its origin in the beautiful crunch of the root when biting and the fruity flesh-like consistency inside. Their taste is often compared to that of honey, caramel or molasses.

Accordingly, almost all dishes can be sweetened with the concentrate of the root or the syrup. There are fabulous Yacon recipes, from classic smoothies to yacon soup. A very healthy smoothie recipe that boosts your metabolism consists of the following ingredients:

  • 1 pineapple
  • 1 Yacon Root
  • 50 grams goji berries
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil

The pineapple and the yacon root must be peeled and diced. Once this is done, everything simply needs to be placed in the blender and should ideally be served with ice cubes.
