Keeping healthy is not always so easy. Because supermarkets are full of ingredients that you should avoid or remove from your diet.

To be honest, do you really spend time reading labels when shopping?

The fact is that only a few people do so. Even those who care about their health will not read the labels every time they buy food.

You should also remember that some foods are not good for you and have no nutritional value. This means that they can cause discomfort, such as abdominal swelling, allergy and even chronic diseases.

Therefore, please read our articles carefully for your health.

7 Unhealthy dietary ingredients you should avoid

1. Refined flour

Refined flour was heavily processed. This means that natural fibres and nutrients have been removed. Consequently, when you consume these products, you only consume carbohydrates that do not provide any added nutritional value.

Refined flour leads to an increase in blood sugar due to its low fibre content. And this in turn can lead to cravings and mood swings.

On the other hand, refined flour containing gluten tends to cause intestinal inflammation. This is due to the fact that the human intestine is not designed to consume the amounts of gluten found in our current diet.

Gluten is a naturally occurring protein in wheat and other grains that gives bread structure and support. When gluten comes into contact with our intestines, it triggers an immune response that damages the walls of the small intestine.

Although not everyone suffers from celiac disease (a gluten intolerance), most people show a negative reaction to eating gluten in large quantities. In fact, the incidence of gluten-related diseases has increased significantly around the world in recent decades.

It is therefore advisable to replace refined flour with wholemeal products or gluten-free flour. However, it is not a good idea to stop flour consumption altogether. Flour products provide us with energy and fibre. For this reason, it is best that you choose a healthier option instead of refined flour.

2. Refined sugar

The second ingredient you should remove from your diet is contained in almost everything you eat. That’s why it’s such a big problem! Refined sugar affects your metabolic functions, leading to intestinal inflammation.

This chronic inflammation in turn has a negative effect on your immune system and makes you more susceptible to chronic diseases and cancer.

In some cases, it is difficult to detect refined sugars because they have several different names, such as dextrose, fructose or corn syrup. The most common problems associated with excessive sugar consumption are

  • Diabetes
  • thyroid problems
  • depression
  • obesity

The best way to avoid the above ailments is to choose fresh and natural foods. Remember, however, that many fruits also contain sugar. In these cases, however, it is a natural sugar that rarely harms you if you do not overdo it by eating sugary fruits.

3. Processed meat

Sausages and cured meat are processed to contain more fat, salt and sugar than fresh meat.

When you eat sausage, your digestion will slow down.

As a result, the stomach processes these foods much slower than normal and produces a lot of gas.

Processed meat is associated with various cancers (gastric cancer, colon cancer and pancreatic cancer).

Therefore, it is best to eat natural foods, such as beef, chicken or turkey breast meat, fish.

4. Sweetener

The next ingredients you should eliminate from your diet are the most commonly used artificial sweeteners and flavour enhancers. Although they can help make your food taste better, they can also cause insulin resistance.

Aspartame is an artificial chemical that affects your body and in some cases can cause headaches, bowel problems and seizures.

Although aspartame is low in calories, it also has a neurotoxic effect that can be very harmful if consumed regularly.

On the other hand, monosodium glutamate is used to improve the taste and extend the shelf life of processed products. Due to its neurotoxic effects, excessive consumption can lead to nausea, anxiety, weakness and dizziness.

Just like refined sugar, it’s a good idea to completely eliminate these ingredients from your diet. Instead, use honey, coconut sugar or liquid stevia to sweeten your food.

And use spices to enhance the aroma! Mustard, pepper, oregano, rosemary and other herbs greatly reduce the need for artificial enhancers.

5. Fried food

You may have heard that trans fats are also one of the ingredients you should banish from your diet? They are the most harmful types of fats that people consume. Yet they can be found everywhere.

Trans fats also occur naturally (like red meat), but our biggest source of trans fats are fried and processed foods.

Regular consumption of trans fats increases the likelihood of suffering from cardiovascular problems and congested arteries. They are also difficult to digest, so your stomach health will be compromised in the long run.

It is therefore best not to eat fried foods. Cook, if possible, your own food or check the labels.

6. Potassium bromate

This ingredient is contained in most processed breads. The problem with potassium borate is that excessive consumption of this ingredient increases your chances of developing cancer.

At the same time, it changes your hormone levels and facilitates the development of kidney infections.

To avoid these unpleasant side effects, it is best to buy your bread from a baker or bake it yourself at home.

7. Food color additive

Artificial food dyes are the last ingredient on our list and they are here for a reason. There is a large variety of artificial dyes, but we will focus in particular on Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 5.

These two dyes have been associated with the following conditions and diseases:

  • some cancers
  • Inflammation of the colon and intestine
  • Gas, flatulence and diarrhoea

Therefore, you should not eat products that contain these dyes.

Other ingredients you should remove from your diet

In addition to the ingredients mentioned above, there are some other common additives that you should avoid as well:

  • Soda: Aspartame AND refined sugar are combined. For this reason, this ingredient is an absolute no-go in a healthy diet.
  • Carrageenan: This common ingredient is found in many milk substitutes and is associated with increased intestinal inflammation. This in turn can increase the risk of irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and other chronic bowel diseases.
  • Soy sauce: It simply contains too much sodium for us. So keep it ready for special occasions only.
