Detox drinks or any other type of cleansing drink are not able to provide your body with all the essential nutrients it needs on a permanent basis.

There are many benefits to water-based detox drinks when they are consumed as part of a comprehensive program that takes into account your individual needs, health status and other factors.

We review them all in this expert guide, so that you can get the most out of your detoxification, and avoid common side effects, risks and mistakes.

What is detox drink and what does it do?

Detox water is a water-based drink that contains ingredients that can help eliminate toxins from your body. The main ingredient of detoxification water should always be high quality water.

The other ingredients generally have natural medicinal, detoxifying or moisturizing properties, and can also add taste to water.

The purpose of detoxification water is to perfect your detoxification program, water-based purification, or to accelerate it by providing your body with key nutrients that can enhance detoxification without providing additional calories.

Detox drinks are generally digestible, and allow the body, which must constantly digest solid foods, to take a break.

The problem with the detox drink

The most common mistake with water and detox drinks is to get into the habit of often substituting them for meals.

This risky approach allows you to lose more weight or make detoxification more effective, but can also lead to nutritional deficiencies and other health problems.

Detox drinks or any other type of cleansing drink are not able to provide your body with all the essential nutrients it needs on a permanent basis. Regardless of the type of water or detoxification drinks you use, it is impossible to get all the vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein, fatty acids and other essential nutrients simply by drinking drinks.

It is well known that avoiding the body to eat solid foods for a short period of time has many health benefits (e. g. intermittent fasting, juice detoxification, etc.).

It is really at this time that drinking water and detox drinks works best. However, you need to balance the time when you avoid your body digesting food and allow it to detoxify, with the time when you return to a solid diet.

Another common problem we see with many detox drinks is the ingredients added in addition to water. Many detoxification water recipes contain aggressive herbs that can be toxic to the body!

Quite the opposite of what you are looking for when you detoxify your body! Other detoxification recipes contain a high amount of sugars, which can also reduce your body’s ability to effectively remove toxins and cleanse itself.

If you decide to include fruit juices in your detox drinks, you may want to consider eating whole fruits instead.

Speaking of fruit juices… if you are considering preparing a detoxification juice and you are wondering what is the best detoxification drink to enhance the action of your cleansing, our long experience and practice of many detoxification programs and treatments have shown that the majority of people will enjoy the benefits of low sugar vegetable and green fruit drinks.

The benefits

Many of the health benefits of consuming detox water are related to increasing water absorption in parallel with decreasing food consumption.

This allows the body, which must constantly digest solid food, to rest while obtaining sufficient water to safely eliminate toxins and waste.

This is a very important benefit, especially since most people eat too much and do not drink enough water:

This is where the benefits of detoxification water are most sparkling, especially when water and detox drinks are consumed as part of a water-based cleaning or detoxification program or any other type of water-based purification program.

The benefits of detox waters include:

  • An increase in energy
  • A better mood and a state of well-being
  • Better digestion
  • Less bloating, gas, and other digestive problems
  • A better complexion
  • Improved mental clarity

However, if you eat a lot of processed foods, eat too much and plan to drink in addition to water or detoxification drinks between meals, you will not be able to enjoy their benefits. You have to know that.

How to Make Your Detox Drink?

Water and detox drinks are prepared by infusing water with fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, or by directly adding herbs or herbal extracts to the water.

During the manufacture of detox drinks:

  • understand why each ingredient is added and how it contributes to achieving your objectives.
  • be aware of sensitivities to certain ingredients and herbs. You want to facilitate detoxification for the body, not create additional obstacles for it during cleansing.
  • Cayenne pepper is a frequent example. Due to its many health benefits, it is widely used in many detox drinks.
  • But if you take it in a detoxification drink on an empty stomach, it will be a different experience than adding it to a dish to spice it up.
  • Something to consider when adding ingredients to your detox drinks.

Based on our practice and long experience in detoxification, here are the main guidelines to help improve detox water quality according to individual needs.

Note that many of the steps below are optional, so it is not necessary to include them all to create your own detox water.

How to make detox water – Step 1/3 – Add fruit

Water infused with fruit:

  • Take high quality water like natural spring water.
  • Use only glass containers or a glass jug to store your detox drink. Mason’s pots do the trick.
  • Add thin slices of the same type of fruit, preferably organic and fresh, to the water. The addition of sweet fruits such as strawberries, blueberries or other berries works very well. Strawberry detoxification water is an excellent example.
  • Slicing the fruit is optional in the case of berries or other small fruits that are consumed with the skin.
  • Avoid infusing different types of fruit such as acidic fruits with sweet fruits.
  • Avoid mixing fruit juices with water as they can increase the calorie and sugar content. This can compromise the entire detoxification process.
  • Lemon and citrus fruits are an exception, see the next section – Lemon Detox Water.

Lemon Detox Water

  • If you have not added any fruit to the water, remember to add a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Lemon-based detox water is a highly effective detoxification drink that is considered the absolute reference for preparing many detoxification drinks.
  • Lemon-based detox water works very well with unfiltered raw apple cider vinegar.
A good example of lemon detox water with apple cider vinegar is our Nocturnal Toxic Cleanse designed to remove toxins from your body while you sleep.
  • In addition to lemon-based detox water, detoxification drinks based on grapefruit detoxification are also very popular.
  • Many people are surprised to learn how much it can make a difference to add a few drops of fresh grapefruit.
  • You can also infuse citrus slices such as lemon or grapefruit in water.

How to make detox water – Step 2/3 – Add Herbs and Spices

Detox Water for Special Problems

What is the objective of your detox treatment?

Mixing herbs or spices with your water-based detox drink does more than just add flavour; many herbs and spices have medicinal properties that can strengthen your detoxification and help you with your health problems.

Adding liquid herbal extracts, tinctures specially designed to treat these problems, can greatly increase the effectiveness of your water-based detox drink.

To avoid potential reactions to poor quality herbs or spices, it is recommended to use organic or wild herbs from a trusted person.

Here are some examples:

(When using liquid herbal extracts in your detox drinks, always use alcohol-free extracts.)

Liver & gallbladder health

For specific liver or gallbladder health problems, liver cleansing herbs such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion Root and Chancapiedra are used to help the liver detoxify and regenerate.

Energy & Stress

For fatigue, lack of energy and stress, energetic and anti-stress herbs such as Ashwagandha, ginseng or maca have proven their usefulness: they do not contain stimulants such as caffeine; however, when used properly, they often provide “clean” energy that lasts for hours.

Joint Pain & Inflammation

If you are currently taking NSAIDs or other medications for headaches, muscle aches, joint pain or inflammation, you may want to try our Pina Colada Miraculous recipe, which is anti-inflammatory and has a low carbohydrate content.

This detoxification drink contains powerful ingredients whose strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have been scientifically proven. She also has good taste.

Brain & Mood

This is one of our popular detox drinks for the brain and mood: it is a perfect example of how effective the detox water recipe is and how easy it is to make:

Kidney health

One of the benefits of a detox water cure is the potential benefit to kidney health.
In order to promote the kidneys’ action to eliminate toxins and support healthy kidney function during your detoxification, kidney cleansing herbs such as bearberry, chancapiedra, field horsetail are commonly used.

Adding these herbs to your detox drinks as part of your water-based detox treatment can improve the kidneys’ ability to detoxify and improve your detoxification results as you increase your water intake.

Additional tips:

  • If you use roots such as turmeric or ginger, cut them into small pieces or grate them and add them to your detox water.
  • There is another option for making detox tea: add ginger or turmeric to spring water, bring to a boil, cover and leave on medium heat for a few minutes, wait for the tea to cool and add it to your detox water.
  • If you are preparing a detox drink with lemon water, consider adding fresh herbs such as mint leaves, rosemary or other herbs. Put one at a time so that you can more easily assess their individual effect on you.

How to make detox water – Step 3/3 – Improve Taste

Once steps 1 and 2 are completed, cover, refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours or leave overnight. Meanwhile, the water-based detox drink takes on its flavour as the ingredients infuse into the water.

Try the drink, and consider adding one of the following ingredients to improve the taste:

  • If your detox water tastes bitter, consider adding pink Himalayan salt. The addition of salt reduces the ability of our taste buds to detect bitterness.
  • The use of Himalayan pink salt also increases the mineral trace content of your water-based detox drink.
  • For a sweeter taste, consider adding stevia. Stevia is a natural herbal sweetener that has a low impact on blood sugar levels. The standard serving contains no calories or carbohydrates.
  • When using stevia, remember that a small amount is enough! If you add a lot of it and are still not satisfied with the sweet taste, consider trying with more Himalayan pink salt, as salt is a flavor enhancer.
  • Other spices to consider to improve taste include cinnamon powder, vanilla pods, cayenne powder (to give an extra boost).

Note that these spices and many others can also have detoxifying properties.

Detox Water for Weight Loss

Detox water is used very frequently to lose weight, although it can cause many problems when misused.

The best detoxification for weight loss always results from a combination of a detoxification program, with exercise and detox drinks.

Water-based detox drinks can offer many benefits as part of a comprehensive weight loss program.

How to lose weight with the detox drink? Our tips and advice

Drink your detox water to lose weight in the morning when you get up and between meals. Many people find detox water very useful during a short period of fasting, such as an intermittent fast or before a workout.

Turn your detox water into fat-burning detox water:

  • Add organic coffee or cold Matcha green tea.
  • Add organic coffee or cold Matcha green tea.
  • Add energizing and anti-stress herbs.
  • Add stevia to taste (optional).

When consuming caffeine-based ingredients such as coffee or tea, start with small amounts and see if you can handle them. Some people are very sensitive to caffeine.

Some mistakes to avoid

Letting your body rest and stop eating solid foods for a short time (for example, by following an intermittent fast, water detoxification, or a water-based detoxification diet) can have many health benefits, especially when it comes to getting rid of toxins or promoting weight loss.

However, this must be part of a complete exercise and detoxification program to ensure that your body always absorbs all the essential nutrients.

Detox water or in fact any detox drink cannot provide your body with all the essential nutrients it needs to be healthy.

No matter what type of detox water or detoxic drinks you use, they alone cannot provide all the minerals, vitamins, fibre, protein, essential fatty acids and other essential nutrients.
